Love Story - Erich Segal

Love Story by Erich Segal, is a romantic and funny, yet tragic story, that over 35 years ago had an entire generation in love, in tears, and spouting "Love means never having to say you're sorry".
It is the story of 2 young college grads, who's love was stronger then any of the tests life threw at them. Oliver Barrett IV, a rich(very rich), big Harvard jock, heir to the Barrett fortune and legacy. Jennifer Cavilleri, daughter of a Cranston, Rhode Island baker, with not much money, but lots of love. Oliver was expected to follow in his father's huge footsteps, Jennifer, a music major was to go on and study in Paris. Both from very different worlds. But when they met, the sparks flew, and we get involved with them as their love grows deep and strong.

It's a moving story, and if you have a hankerin for a real romance, you want to laugh and cry, and have never read this one before, you should go for it. A good read, and a fast one, just doesn't have the same sentimental punch over time. Highly recommended to romantics who have not read it yet. You'll smile, you'll cry.

Falling in Love - Ayala Malach Pines

Falling in Love is the first book to unlock the mysteries of how and why we fall in love. Renowned psychologist Ayala Pines shows us why we fall for the people we do, and argues convincingly that we love neither by chance nor by accident. She offers sound advice for making the right choices when it comes to this complicated emotion. Packed with helpful suggestions for those seeking love and those already in it, this book is about love's many puzzles.
The second edition furthers the work of the popular and successful first edition. With expanded research, theory, and practice, this book once again provides one of a kind understandings of the experience of love. The new edition offers updated references to recent research, new chapter exercises, and "case examples" of romantic stories to begin each chapter.

Sex and the City - Candace Bushnell

Sex and the City is a collection of essays by Candace Bushnell based on her and her friends' lifestyles.[citation needed] It was first published in 1997, and re-published in 2001, 2006, and in 2008 as a 10th anniversary movie tie-in edition.
The book is an anthology of columns that Bushnell began writing in 1994 for The New York Observer. The book was loosely adapted into a long-running HBO television series also called Sex and the City (1998–2004), which itself spawned a 2008 film of the same name and a 2010 sequel.

He's Just Not that Into You - Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo

He's Just Not That Into You is not a guide to dating. Aimed at women of a certain class and lifestyle and filling a slim 165 pages, the book serves merely as a calling card for its authors, five-years-out-of-the-dating-pool Sex and the City consultant Greg Behrendt and 41-years-old-and-single Sex and the City executive story editor Liz Tuccillo. Presumably their participation in the creation of that callow and over-praised HBO television series is what qualifies Greg and Liz (the book always refers to its authors by their first names) to offer relationship guidelines: He's Just Not That Into You is titled after an episode of the show, and the design of the book is engineered to reinforce that connection.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus - John Gray

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus (published in May 1992) is a book by John Gray offering suggestions for improving heterosexual couples' relationships. The book is based on the idea that members of the two genders have diametrically different communication styles, emotional needs and personal values to each other and that heterosexual couples can use this model to improve their relationship. It spawned a series of follow-on books expanding on specific situations.

As indicated by the title, the book asserts the notion that women and men are as different as beings from different planets. Gray adopts this metaphor as the central theme of all his books and seminars, likening men and women to the classical Roman god Mars and goddess Venus as ideal types.

A Child Called "It" - Dave Pelzer

One of the worst child abuse cases in California's history came to an end on March 5, 1973 when Dave Pelzer entered foster care. Dave begins his incredible story as an abused child with his rescue in part one of a series, A Child Called "It". Calling this book a "page turner" doesn't give it justice. Easy to read, but difficult to comprehend how any mother could treat her child this way.

Tuesdays with Morrie - Mitch Albom

Newspaper columnist Mitch Albom recounts time spent with his 78-year-old sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, at Brandeis University, who was dying from Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). Albom, a former student of Schwartz, had not corresponded with him since attending his college classes 16 years earlier. The first three chapters incorporate an ambiguous introduction to the final conversation between Albom and Schwartz, a brief flashback to Albom's graduation, and an account of the events Albom experienced between graduation and the reunion with his professor.

Albom is a successful sports columnist for the Detroit Free Press despite his childhood dream of being a pianist. After seeing Schwartz on Nightline, Albom called Schwartz, who remembered his former pupil despite the lapse of 16 years. Albom was prompted to travel from Michigan to Massachusetts to visit Schwartz. A newspaper strike frees Albom to commute weekly, on Tuesdays, to visit with Schwartz. The resulting book is based on these meetings, supplemented with Schwartz's lectures and life experiences and interspersed with flashbacks and allusions to contemporary events.

Have a Little Faith - Mitch Albom

"Mitch" Albom writes in the introduction to this book that the idea for it began with the request by Albert L. Lewis, his childhood rabbi, to write and deliver the eulogy when the time came for the rabbi's funeral. Albom agreed, contingent on an agreement that he could begin a series of interviews and conversations, in order to get to know Lewis as a man, not just as a rabbi.

Albom writes that his conversations with Lewis -- whom he refers to as the Reb, an affectionate term drawn from the Yiddish word for rabbi -- eventually led to an increased interest on Albom's part in the power and meaning of faith in a larger sense. In his hometown of Detroit, he forged a link with Pastor Henry Covington, an African-American Protestant minister at the I Am My Brother's Keeper Church. Covington, a past drug-addict, dealer, and ex-convict, was ministering to the needs of his down-and-out parishioners, in an urban church serving a largely homeless congregation,in a church so poor that the roof leaked when it rained.

For One More Day - Mitch Albom

For One More Day is the story of a mother and a son, and a relationship that covers a lifetime and beyond. It explores the question: What would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one? As a child, Charley “Chick” Benetto was told by his father, “You can be a mama’s boy or a daddy’s boy, but you can’t be both.” So he chooses his father, only to see the man disappear when Charley is on the verge of adolescence. Decades later, Charley is a broken man. His life has been crumbled by alcohol and regret.

This book revolves on the several life changing questions. If you had the chance, just one chance, to go back and fix what you did wrong in life, would you take it? And if you did, would you be big enough to stand it?

The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

The Little Prince (French: Le Petit Prince), published in 1943, is French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's most famous novella. Saint-Exupéry wrote it while living in the United States. It has been translated into more than 190 languages and sold more than 200 million copies making it one of the best selling books ever.

Though ostensibly a children's book, The Little Prince makes several profound and idealistic observations about life and human nature. Saint-Exupéry tells of a fox meeting the young prince as he exits the Sahara desert. The story's essence is contained in the lines uttered by the fox to the little prince: "On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." ("One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.") Other key thematic messages are articulated by the fox, such as: "You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed" and "It is the time you have lost for your rose that makes your rose so important."

The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold

The Lovely Bones is the story of Susie Salmon, who is raped and killed when she is only fourteen. However, rather than write this story as a thriller, which had been done many times before, Sebold tells it from Susie's perspective: the dead victim tells her own story. This shifts the focus from suspense to the emotional impact of such a crime. The Lovely Bones evokes in minute detail just how much was taken from this young girl, and how much she missed out on, but it also traces in exquisite, painful detail how this violent and undeserved crimes distorts her family. Her mother leaves her father for eight years. Her father tries to catch Susie's killer, and is crippled in the process. Susie's sister and brother are driven into emotional retreat, becoming very distant from their previously idyllic family.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard - J.K. Rowling

The Tales of Beedle the Bard first appeared as a fictional book in J. K. Rowling's 2007 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final novel of the Harry Potter series. The book is bequeathed to Hermione Granger by Albus Dumbledore, former headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is described as a popular collection of Wizarding children's fairy tales, so that while Ron Weasley is familiar with the stories, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger had not previously heard of them due to their non-magical upbringing.

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

One of the most popular novels to emerge in the past twenty years, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, a story about the necessary pursuit of happiness, has endeared its author to thousands of readers worldwide. The Alchemist was originally published in Portuguese in 1988. However, the novel’s translation into English and republication in 1993 made the work an “overnight” financial success. It remains on several best-seller lists every year.
The Alchemist traces the path of Santiago, a young Spanish shepherd who is compelled to follow his dream of finding hidden treasure in Egypt. To do so, he must leave the comfort zone of home, learn to trust the “Soul of the World,” and believe that there are forces in the universe that want us to be happy. In order to find happiness, however, Santiago must first discover his “Personal Legend”—that is to say, he must to discover what he is meant to do in the world. Fortunately, Santiago soon takes the first step in his acquisition of happiness: he listens to his heart and overcomes fear. As Santiago continues his sometimes-painful journey, he discovers that one cannot be dissuaded from pursuing a “Personal Legend,” even if the choices seem impossible to bear. The end result for anyone who does so, Coelho assures his readers, is physical and spiritual reward.

The Witch of Portobello - Paulo Coelho

The Witch of Portobello narrated an exceptional and forceful tale. Coelho has adopted a unique narrative technique. He has written it as a series of accounts of individuals, and their first-person interactions with the unusual protagonist Athena, the witch of Portobello. The story winds around Athena’s dilemma, and her tearing quest to fill up the spaces within her, the negative, the silences in her life, to answer her questions of self, of will and of truth. Her search takes her through a journey of many phases until she realizes that silence is what defines the sound. This discovery is enough for her to open new doors of perception, and she finds within herself, a powerful energy. She is recognized by some as a saint and some as sinner. In fact, through the accounts, it is clear that everyone has encountered a completely different person, as if a creation of their own selves.
The book is a testament to her unshakeable trust in humanity, withstanding all the atrocities which finally killed her. Parts range from light-reading to heavily emotional, depending entirely on the person presenting the account, be it her parents, colleagues, instructors, friends, acquaintances or her husband. However, this ensures that her character comes out complete, different as she was to different people.

Maktub - Paulo Coelho

Maktub is a collection of stories, parabolas that don’t pretend to constitute an apprenticeship but offer a coloured treasure of fragmented wisdom from different cultures. Those short stories, inspired to the writer by vary different sources and folklores, were born from Paulo Coelho’s collaboration with the daily Folha de São Paulo. Coelho selected texts published between June 1993 and June 1994, to offer readers around the world this Maktub, which deepens through the prism of a universal mosaic of oral tradition. According to Paulo Coelho himself, “Maktub is not an advice book, but an exchange of experiences”, an excellent occasion to reflect and meet oneself again.
